On November 15, 2022, Gujarat High Court asked how the repair work of the Morbi Bridge was assigned to the Oreva Group with a tender. High Court asked this question during the hearing of suo-motu petition on the bridge collapse. We tell you that Morbi Bridge was made by the Britishers. This colonial-era bridge is about 150 years old. It was under repair work. And unfortunately, the bridge collapsed on October 29, 2022, due to which at least 140 people were killed. Gujarat High Court also asked how the “largesse of the state” was awarded to a company without floating a tender for such important work in concern of people’s safety. The court also said that the prima facie of the local municipality has defaulted which led to the unfortunate incident. The division bench lashed out at the authorities responsible for that mishap and asked some questions to the government regarding the Oreva Group’s flagship company, Ajanta Manufacturing Ltd which was awarded the repairing work of the bridge. Oreva Group was assigned for the maintenance work of the bridge from 2017 to 2022 however the term of a 2008 agreement on bridge repair and maintenance had been completed.
Oreva Group is a large corporate house that deals in the manufacture of electronic appliances and wall clocks. It is based in Morbi. Division Bench of Cheif Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice Ashutosh Shastri said, “This [the 2008] agreement with Ajanta [Oreva Group] is one-and-a-quarter pages agreement, absolutely without any conditions. This agreement is by way of an understanding, largesse of the State for ten years, and no tenders floated, no Expression of Interest,”
