The sight of a pile of ashes, the remains of Nyathi, who was slain for not having a passport, shocked the world on Thursday.
People came to Nomsa Tshuma’s door for a passport, then tied him up, beat him, and burned him on fire, according to his distressed wife.
Zimbabwean officials have yet to offer a comment two days after the tragedy.
However, the opposition Coalition for Citizen Change (CCC) has accused the Zanu-PF administration of economic mismanagement, accusing it of driving millions of Zimbabweans to South Africa in pursuit of greener pastures.
“The Coalition for Citizen Change firmly condemns Elvis Nyathi’s assassination and burning in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, today. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to Ms Nyathi and Elvis Nyathi’s entire family on the awful loss of their husband, father, friends, and relatives,” the CCC added.
Elvis Nyathi Death Video Explained
“His assassination was avoidable and heinous, and Nyathi, a Zimbabwean national, was a victim of a forced migration problem brought on by Zanu PF’s terrible government.
“After settling in South Africa in quest of a better life, he became the sad victim of indiscriminate house-to-house attacks by a self-defense group that targeted African foreigners without due process and outside the law.”
“Such heinous murder has no place in a constitutional democracy.”
“Immediate arrest and prosecution of the criminals to ensure justice,” opposition parties demanded.
“Elvis Nyathi’s death serves as a stark reminder that Zanu PF has failed Zimbabwe’s population. Due to artificial poverty, injustice, and corruption, citizens such as Elvis Nyathi have been banished from Zimbabwe.
“No Zimbabwean should perish as a result of being compelled to flee the nation due to a lack of leadership. The Harare dictatorship has failed to serve and safeguard Zimbabweans both at home and abroad.”
“We also call on public personalities and shadowy organisations to eliminate anti-immigrant rhetoric of abuse, extortion, and violence towards African people,” said Fadzayi Mahere, a spokesman for the CCC.
The EFF, South Africa’s opposition party, denounced the xenophobic attack on a fellow African and accused the governing African National Congress (ANC) of sponsoring self-defense organisations.
“These are the results of the media and the ruling party’s support and promotion of self-defense groups that want to make a scapegoat for their failure to combat crime, create jobs, and provide proper healthcare to immigrants.”
“It is an absolute fact that South African hospitals are failing because the government lacks the internal capacity to construct and maintain medical infrastructure,” declared the EFF.
